Interface, a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of innovative modular flooring, presents "The positive floor", a new ground-breaking concept that guides visitors through the latest innovation in interior design.
The concept, developed by self-confessed industrial artist Francesco Maria Bandini, can be seen in the attractive setting of Milan's La Triennale, a true temple of design which reflects Italy's artistic and architectural culture. In this labyrinth-like installation, the visitor is guided by his own sensitivity and interpretation of the space.
A towering display rises up within a pure white space, where the visitor can move between imposing prisms, topped with vibrant multi-coloured surfaces. The prisms are arranged so as to recreate the effect of ground "cracked" by the heat of the sun, alluding to environmental issues and the company's tireless commitment to sustainability. Their multi-coloured surfaces, which are made up of Interface carpet tiles, are reflected in a mirrored ceiling. They act as a compass, enabling the visitor to check his position in the maze. Stairs lead to the top of one of the prisms, providing a view of the entire exhibition and an opportunity to admire the prism tops, coated in the stunning patterns and colourful shades of Interface's World Textiles, Ambiance and Design Unlimited collections. These innovative products boast a great diversity of colours, texture and patterns, drawing inspiration from across the globe, and also have strong environmental properties, proving that beauty and sustainability can go hand in hand. Some of these new ranges are also inspired by nature. Based on the discipline of Biomimicry, these products echo the Earth's natural patterns and can be installed randomly, creating less waste.
"The installation aims to take people's perception of flooring and turn it on its head. We have created a physical journey into the surreal where what should be under our feet, the floor, exists high up in another reality, a reality as positive as Interface carpet tiles," says Michele Iacovitti Vice President Marketing Communications and Branding EMEAI at Interface.
"When we look up, whilst searching for the ground we need to continue our journey and give our choices the right direction, a thought crosses our minds. For just this this one moment we wish that our feet were up in the air," comments the designer Francesco Maria Bandini, who developed the project for Interface.
