Habit/Form:
A solid, distinguished looking pine tree that enjoys humid climates and moist soils. I think it has a slight touch of prehistoric feel/appearance. In Australia we planted Slash Pines along beach-fronts and they have grown very well, creating a great wind-break and barrier-line between major roads and the beach. Our Cockatoo birds love the Slash Pine. They offer an alternative habitat/shape that compliments the environment that Araucaria and Casuarina provide along water and beach areas. The Slash Pine also doesn't seem to mind sandy soils, but they do take a beating from our coastal storms or strong winds. They are described as having a fast growth rate, which tends to correspond with a shorter lifespan, so studies have supported that the Slash Pine does not live as long as other pine trees.
There are two distinct/well known varieties of the Slash Pine, mainly based on geographic location and some physical differences in fruit and leaf size, thickness in wood and habit/dome size as well as height. Both varieties still share a likeness that represents the species.
Adult P. elliotii will be around 20-30m, usually single trunked, (I seen many with codominant stems), ascending branches forming a broad dome, some of these branches can be quite large. This is not your typical conical pine. Has a grey-black, smoky black-brown bark, can have brown-red/orangey tone as well, thick scaly/plated bark, with distinct ridges and furrowed appearance, scaly plates can have a rusty orange-brown colour, the grey colours can be smoky, some look light in contrast to the darker areas.
Leaves:
Long glossy mid-dark green needles, acicular, around 180-240mm long, in groups of 2-3, held together by fascicles at the base of the leaves (needles). In one of the main variation it is characteristic to predominantly have leaves in groups of 2.
Fruit:
Species grows both male and female reproductive organs on a single tree. Can take over 10 years before they produce any reproductive organs. Glossy red-brown conical cone 50-150mm, with a short thick prickle on each scale.

Habit/Form:
A straggly twisty-like broad pine, can be bushy as well as contorted, usually irregular canopy but can still maintain some form of the usual pyramidal pine shape. Can have a nice spread of radiating branches allowing many options for pruning and shape training, lots of hanging and movement in branches, very charismatic for a pine tree, strikes unique poses. Perfectly comfortable growing-out or refined and elegant. Many thunbergii that are maintained and cared for may not appear so straggly.
Local growth in neighbourhoods, city, domestic, etc, will average 6-24m, expect to see it around 9-12m or a small to medium tree, but can reach 40m in natural habitat. Young thunbergii can have thin grey trunks and branches, maturing into a dark furrow, grey-brown, ashy grey or darker(black), plated and scaly, also dark grey with brown tints, good size thickness. Its irregular furrowed plates can be quite striking.
A tough tree that tolerates pollution and less than ideal conditions (although it does stress and seems to have quite a few attacking feeders and borers, insects, etc), tolerates salt and grows on coasts, roots handle salt, tolerates drought and various soils. A popular tree for the art of bonsai. Can be long lived.
Leaves:
Dark green, rich dark, glossy, needle-like acicular, fine pointed, 60-120mm, in groups/pairs of 2 held together by fascicles at the base. The fascicle/sheath can have white/silvery colouring at the base.
Flower:
The thunbergii produces both male and female flowers. An inconspicuous, uneventful flower, although you may read classifications which describe a yellow male and purplish-red female flower. Flowers can be mistaken for small coloured cones, egg-shaped and clustering close to branch tips.
Fruit:
Light brown, woody, ovoid-conical egg-shaped cones, symmetrical, female 30-70mm, scaled with small points on the tips. Male cones are smaller around 10-20mm, growing in clusters of about 10-20 cones.
